What physical properties do amethyst gemstones posses?

I was born in February and I just found out that my birthstone is amethyst. I'm curious to know what this gemstone looks like and what are its physical characteristics?

Amethyst gemstones are both beautiful and durable, which makes them a wonderful choice for gemstone jewelry, especially for those born in the month of February, as it is the February birthstone. Amethysts also belong to the quartz family of gemstones and rate at 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.

Amethyst hue ranges from light pinkish violet to a deep purple. In the right light, amethyst stones can exhibit secondary hues of red or blue. The stone's ideal grade is termed ""Deep Siberian"". Due to its hardness level of seven on the Mohs scale, amethyst is often used in jewelry.
