I'm about to buy my girlfriend a piece of gemstone jewelry, and wondered if it's custom to buy women jewelry incorporated with their own specific birthstone rather than any kind of gemstone. I would love to get some suggestions and tips regarding this dilemma I'm having.

I think the incorporation of birthstones in gemstone jewelry really depends on the woman and how connected she feels to her particular birthstone. My guess would be that women that are into astrology would probably be more into having birthstones set in their gemstone jewelry than women who have no interest in the subject. Then again, "what's your sign?" is a much more popular question than "what's your birthstone", so I suppose it's quite possible that many women have no idea what their birthstones are, and would thus, not have any conscious preference for birthstones in their gemstone jewelry. But if a woman does know her birthstone and happens to love it, then I believe that she would naturally be more inclined to buy gemstone jewelry set with her own birthstone. Generally, I think women prefer to wear jewelry that they believe complements their skin tone and their overall appearance – if that just so happens to be their birthstone, then I am pretty sure that would be their preference.

Not necessarily. Personally, I usually buy gemstone encrusted jewelry that appeals to me, and that would suit me best. I admit, it would be special to own birthstone jewelry set with my own birthstone but I don't think that most women are inclined to choosing their birthstone when it comes to jewelry shopping. Not all birthstones are considered equally appealing. A person may not always like the visual appearance of his or her birthstone and may even avoid buying any jewelry set with the particular birthstone. It all come s to personal, subjective tastes and styles.

I would bet that most women don't even know what their birthstone is, and if they do - unless of course they were lucky enough to be born in April and their birthstone happens to be a diamond - they probably don't feel particularly connected with their birthstone. For example, my birthday is in August and my birthstone is a peridot - a pretty much worthless snot-green gemstone, so i certainly prefer birthstone jewelry NOT set with peridot. I'd take diamond and sapphire jewelry over peridot any day, birthstone or no.

In general I don't think most women limit themselves to their birthstone, but i think it also depends on what specific piece of jewelry you're buying. Some colored gemstones and birthstones look better in particular pieces of jewelry than in others. Gemstone stud earrings, for example, look great with birthstones because the gems are present in limited quantity and they make a small but elegant statement. Plus, they can be matched to specific outfits, and women tend to change their earrings to match their outfits more than any other piece of jewelry such as necklaces or rings.
