What is Ayurveda and what does it have to do with birthstones?

I came across this term while searching for my girlfriend's birthstone (she was born in June), and I would appreciate it if someone explained it to me

Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine originating from ancient India, dating as far back as 1500 BC. The name actually means "science of life" – the words 'ayus' means life and 'veda' means science. In terms of birthstones, an ayurvedic list is a list of gemstones that are believed to have special healing powers. You might come across an ayurvedic list when you search for a person's birthstone, as it will most probably appear in addition to the list of traditional birthstones and modern birthstones that are most commonly known. Each one of the 12 calendar months are associated with a specific ayurvedic gemstones in the following order:

  • January - Garnet

  • February - Amethyst

  • March - Bloodstone

  • April - Diamond

  • May - Agate

  • June – Pearl

  • July – Ruby

  • August – Sapphire

  • September – Moonstone

  • October – Opal

  • November – Topaz

  • December – Ruby

So, as you can see, your girlfriend's ayurvedic birthstone would be a pearl as she was born in June. In ayurvedic belief, pearls are said to enlighten believers about their true self and finding their meaning in life.
