The mother of pearl is also known as nacre and it is found in the inner layers of mollusk shells, it is a substance that actually makes up a pearl (hence the name MOTHER of pearl), although it is not found in every shell. It is iridescent and extremely beautiful!
Mother of pearl is often used in feng shui and is placed around the house in strategic positions. The strengths of the mother of pearl are said to depend on what objects it is surrounded with, it is said to strengthen the power and energy of other stones or objects. If one wants to become wealthy then the mother of pearl will be placed near objects that represent wealth and prosperity; where as if one wants to attract happiness then it will be placed amongst objects that represent or attract happiness. It is also a symbol of good luck and thus is very commonly received as gifts from family and friends. Often people will wear mother of pearl around their necks to bring themselves luck and happiness as well as to attract positive people and situations.

It's important not to confuse mother of pearl with pearl. Mother of pearl is the lustrous layer within a mollusk shell that is used in jewelry. Pearls are an entire circular ball of this material.
