My mother is a bit old fashioned. She believes that a woman should always come equipped with a natural white pearl strand. I don't agree. I think that pearl jewelry can look a little outdated. Sure, pearl jewelry is fine when it's worn by brides on their wedding days, but I'm not a bride and I'd feel kind of embarrassed wearing the strand out in public. Any ideas on how I could dress down or funk up my pearl strand?

First of all, you don't have to wear your pearl necklace all the time and not even every time you see your mother, just every once in a while when you know you're going to see her. Second of all, remember that pearls are classic! They can look very sophisticated or incredibly young and fresh – it all depends on how you choose to wear your pearl jewelry. One thing you can do to give your pearl necklace a chic young look is tie the strand (if it's long enough to tie of course). Knotted pearls give your look a chic twist. Since pearl jewelry is generally quite understated, you can also feel free to combine your pearl necklace with diamonds or gold jewelry to spice things up a bit. The absolute best thing you can do to offset the sophisticated look of pearl jewelry is to wear a hip colorful outfit that will divert the attention from the necklace to your overall ensemble. Who knows, after a little experimenting with your pearl necklace you may even end up viewing pearl jewelry in a whole new way!

You could dress up your conventional looking pearl jewelry by having your pearls irradiated or dyed. By applying gemstone enhancement treatments to your pearls, you can turn them into an appealing grayish-blue hue, which is both chic, edgy and unusual .If you prefer not to treat your pearls, than perhaps you could consider adding colorful gemstones or birthstones to your pre-existing pearl jewelry. Colorful gemstones can add a fun twist to your pearl jewelry, and turn it into a stylish, modern piece.

If you insist on wearing the pearl strand necklace your mother gave you then perhaps you could try wearing the necklace with some youthful and colorful looking dresses or pair the necklace with edgy earrings or bracelets. Another way of negating the old-fashioned feel of the pearls is wearing the strand with additional necklaces, which will create a colorful layered l look. (so the pearls won't be so visible).

Hmm, that's a tough one. I agree that pearl strands are way outdated, but maybe you can get some retro charm out of the necklace. Try exaggerating the necklace's old fashioned character by adding a baroque style pendant to the center. Wear it with a tailored vintage style button down blouse and you got a great look.
