Can I knot a natural pearl necklace?

I have a lovely strand of natural and genuine pearls which I really want to have knotted. Will knotting the necklace damage the pearls? Will it be expensive?

Natural pearls are indeed a soft organic material yet they aren't as fragile as you may think. Having your pearl strand knotted is not supposed to damage the pearls if the jeweler who does the knotting is experienced in these types of tasks and in working specifically with pearls (many jewelers don't know how to handle pearls so make sure that the jeweler you choose for the job is capable and experienced). The pearl strand knotting in itself shouldn't be too expensive, it is a relatively simple procedure and does not require removing pearls or re-stringing pearls.

Not only can you tie a pearl necklace – you absolutely should! To protect your pearls from rubbing against each other, tie a knot between each pearl on your pearl necklaces and bracelets and be sure to restring your pearl jewelry every few years. Tying knots in your pearl jewelry will not only keep your pearls from rubbing against each other, it will also help you avoid losing pearls if the strand of your pearl necklace or pearl bracelet breaks.
