I am in the process of designing my own engagement ring. I really want to have a diamond as a center stone but I also want to incorporate pearls in the setting (as they are my birthstone, and my favorite precious gemstone). I was wondering whether pairing pearls with other gemstones is appropriate. Is it a common practice? And, will the resulting piece of jewelry look tacky?

If you're interested in adding a little color to your pearl jewelry, but you're not sure whether introducing colorful gemstones into your pearl jewelry will result in a tacky looking piece, consider instead mounting your pearls into colorful metal settings. Metal settings can come in a rainbow of colors including: black, red, rose, green, purple, etc. Pearls of various shapes, sizes and colors can look quite stunning when mounted into colorful metal settings. For example, consider mounting white pearls into a black gold setting. The dark color of the gold will offset the beautiful white sheen of the pearls, thus resulting in pearl jewelry which is incredibly unique and striking. The only drawback involved in mounting pearls into colorful metal settings would be the cost of having such a piece made. Since pearls are considered to be a traditional gemstone, they are commonly set into traditional metal settings (settings made out of yellow gold, white gold or platinum). Consequently, you would have to have your colorful metal set pearl jewelry custom made, which may cost a little more than buying pre-made pearl jewelry items.

Definitely gaudy. The elegance of pearl jewelry lies in its purity and simplicity. Cluttering a pearl necklace, for example, with a bunch of colorful and glittering gemstones would completely counteract the exquisite and unique grace of pearl jewelry. Pearl necklaces, pearl bracelets and pearl stud earrings are timeless and classy pieces of jewelry and should remain as such. However, I do believe that pearls go well with diamonds, and that pearl jewelry incorporated with colorless diamonds is both classy and timelessly elegant.

You can always add different types of colored gemstones to pearl jewelry, it need not look tacky. Just make sure the colors of the gemstones don't clash with the pearls and that the jewelry does not look too cluttered, heavy or gaudy. For instance, adding colored gemstones to a white pearl necklace can add a splash of color to the jewelry, as well as a little flare. Since white pearls are versatile you can add any color of gemstone to the jewelry. However, if you choose pastel colored pearls, such as pink, green, purple or blue colored pearls, you need to start color coordinating. For example, pairing pink pearls with green colored gemstones such as emeralds or peridots, or with blue colored stones such as sapphire, may cause the colors to clash. Designed correctly, pearl and colored gemstone jewelry can be quite stunning and eye-catching.
