Is it possible to mount a pearl instead of a diamond?
My girlfriend has been hinting that instead of a diamond engagement ring, that she would prefer one with a pearl as the center stone. Is that even possible?

The answer is partly yes and partly no. Technically yes it is possible to place a pearl gemstone instead of a diamond as the central stone in an engagement ring. The reason I say no though because of the fragility of pearls in contrast to diamonds and other gemstones. Pearls are the only gemstone to be created inside a living being (a mollusk) and as a result it is easy for them to become worn or damaged from everyday wear. What gives genuine pearls their brilliant shine is the nacre, or the outside layer. This layer can easily be worn down by everyday cosmetic products such as perfumes and skin creams.
Another reason that I am trying to deter you from choosing a pearl as the centre stone in your engagement ring is that it is hard to fasten a pearl to the ring itself. This is because the pearl cannot be held in place with prongs because they would easily scratch and dent the pearl. The fastening is done by glue, which is generally less reliable than metal prongs.
So even though it is possible to do, its not the best idea if you want to keep the pearl in good condition and if you want to be sure you won't lose it.
