Why is a strand of matched natural pearls so expensive?

I was planning on getting my wife a natural pearl strand for her upcoming birthday. But when I went online to look at natural pearl strands I was absolutely shackled by the high prices attached to this type of pearl jewelry. When I looked at cultured pearl strands, I noticed that they were considerably less expensive than natural pearl strands. Why is it that natural pearl strands are so expensive?

Natural pearls are hard to come by as it is. Since they grow wild in nature their shape cannot be controlled. Thus, natural pearls come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Their varied shapes are hard to match, no two diamonds are identical and that goes for pearls as well. This is why matched natural pearl strands are exceedingly rare, highly sought after, and when sold are priced at hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you cannot afford a matched (or uniform) natural pearl strand, then consider buying a graduated natural pearl strand. Graduated pearl strands are easier to come by since the pearls on the strand are varied in size. Hence, graduated pearl strands are an affordable alternative to the uniform natural pearl strand. If you ahve your heart set on a uniform pearl strand, then I suggest purchasing a uniform cultivated pearl strand. Cultivated pearls' sizes are controlled throughout the cultivating process, thus a uniform strand made out of cultured pearls would be far less rare than a natural pearl uniform strand.
