The film "Girl With a Pearl Earring" is based on the novel, written by Tracy Chevalier. The author writes a fictional account of the story behind the painting (as no one really knows exactly what inspired it). The painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring" is an extraordinary instance of pearls and pearl jewelry figuring in works of art. The famous painting depicts a beautiful young lady turned towards the viewer wearing a rather large drop pearl earring. The pearl's luster is captured with great expertise in this stunning painting sometimes regarded as "The Dutch Mona Lisa". This renowned painting was created by the Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer around 1665.

The film "Girl With a Pearl Earring" stays true to the novel for the most part, with some exclusions to accommodate the standard length of a feature film. The author of the novel, Tracy Chevalier, sold the rights to a small British production company, Archer Street Films, several months after publishing, before the novel achieved any true success. This is probably what makes the film "Girl With a Pearl Earring" such an interesting picture. If it had been a Hollywood production, chances are "Girl With a Pearl Earring" would have turned out to be a completely different film, far from the artistic composition made by the British company.

The painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring" is a spectacular work of art that continues to allude art theorists to this day. Just a few of the many questions raised by the painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring" are – Who is the girl in the painting? Was it supposed to be a portrait? Was the painting ever sold by Vermeer? Why was the painting unknown until its rediscovery in 1882? Was the large drop pearl earring real? Was the pearl earring in the painting once part of a pendant? Does the turban worn by the girl in the painting have any meaning? What were Johannes Vermeer's painting methods? Why was the background of the painting originally green? The list goes on and on. The classic painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring" currently hangs in The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis (Maurice House) in The Hague, Netherlands.
