Can a wedding ring be used as an engagement ring or vice versa?

I've been shopping for a wedding ring for my bride to be, and I've noticed that the jewelry shops strictly distinguish between wedding rings and engagements rings. I happen to find most of the wedding rings quite plain and unattractive, so can I buy her another so-called 'engagement ring' to give her on our wedding day?

Sure it can. Some couples may prefer a simple band as an engagement ring, not everyone wants a rock. It's up to the couple and their personal preferences. The engagement ring can also double as a wedding band. There is something romantic about getting a diamond on your wedding day.

These days, there is no real difference between a wedding band and an engagement ring. Historically, wedding bands were plain banded while engagement rings were set with diamonds and other precious gemstones. Nowadays, it has become increasingly common for wedding bands to be mounted with diamonds and precious gemstones, rather than be left plain. Thus, the historical difference between wedding bands and engagement rings has been blurred and, as a result, wedding bands have begun to double as engagement rings and even replace engagement rings altogether. In addition, bridal sets have become an immensely popular alternative to separate engagement rings and wedding bands. Bridal sets are compromised of two bands which are soldered together to represent the wedding band and engagement ring. They can be diamond or precious gemstone encrusted or they can be plain banded. The bridal set symbolizes the couple's eternal union and commitment to one another. The double band has made the whole engagement ring versus wedding band debate a mute point.

In theory, I believe that a wedding band can be used as an engagement ring. However, this is very unusual. I don't know anyone who has used a wedding band as an engagement ring. I think this is because the wedding band is typically essential to the wedding ceremony and is supposed to be exchanged between husband and wife with vows during the ceremony. The engagement ring, on the other hand is almost always picked out and worn for a period before the wedding. This is the first ring and, most commonly, the more extravagant. While wedding bands can have diamonds in them, and they also represent love and commitment, they are more imbued with serious symbolism and represent the bond of marriage, whereas an engagement ring is imbued with the promise of marriage- a marriage that, this day in age, is not always realized. It seems to be a bit more logical to use an engagement ring as a wedding band. This might simply save the couple time and money. Also, for those who aren't big fans of jewelry, and diamond jewelry in particular, it can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. After the couple decides to get engaged, they can both go to pick out their respective engagement rings or wedding bands that they will then exchange during the ceremony. If a diamond is embedded in the wedding band, then it is even more reasonable to call it both a wedding band and an engagement ring.
