Can wedding bands have gemstones in them?

I always thought wedding bands were supposed to be solid metal, but lately I've been seeing wedding rings set with diamonds and other gemstones. Are such wedding bands considered acceptable?

Wedding bands set with precious gemstones are perfectly acceptable. In fact, you may be interested to know that English royalty have made it a practice to exchange gemstone encrusted wedding bands and engagement rings, rather than the traditional plain banded wedding rings. The Queen of England herself owns sapphire embedded bands. In my opinion, gemstone wedding bands are incredibly trendy and stylish. They add color and flare, as well as uniqueness, to the traditional plain precious metal wedding bands. Wedding rings can be set with a multitude of precious gemstones in every color shape and style imaginable. Instead of wearing a conventional plain banded wedding ring, consider a stunning ruby set wedding ring or a beautiful emerald and sapphire encrusted wedding band.

Traditionally wedding bands were solid metal rings, because an unbroken circle symbolizes eternity – with no beginning or end. Wedding rings generally had no holes or aberrations in them, because that might mean holes or disruptions in the marriage. Nowadays, a plain gold wedding band is the most popular wedding ring pattern for both men and women, but in the past 50 years or so, wedding rings set with diamonds or other gems are becoming more and more popular. It was around the 1950s that the De Beers jewelry company coined the phrase "a diamond is forever" launching a marketing campaign encouraging both brides and grooms to wear diamond wedding bands. As you can see today, the campaign was incredibly successful and gem and diamond wedding rings were adopted into the mainstream. Nonetheless, many people still prefer to keep it simple and wear solid wedding bands.

I have noticed that lots of people are wearing flashy diamond wedding bands lately too. I got married with a plain silver wedding band, and I think that's the best way to go. Marriage is a sacred institution based on the love between two people, security and solidity, and in my opinion it does not need to be advertised with extravagant diamond and gemstone jewelry. That's what the engagement ring is for! I also think it's a little over the top to wear two diamond rings on one finger – they end up detracting from each others impression. Just as no one but the bride is supposed to wear white at the wedding so that she stands out, I think a beautiful diamond engagement ring should be contrasted by a simple gold or silver wedding band.
