The exterior surface of a diamond gemstone accumulates dirt, debris, and fat from the various processes it goes through before it is ready for examination. The diamond gemstone must be cleaned before it is suitable for examination. In order to remove the exterior fat and dirt the diamond gemstone is immersed in alcohol and wiped with a soft cloth. On some occasions this is not sufficient and the stone must be boiled in a special acid. The cloth that is used to wipe the diamond must be of a type that does not shed fibers as to not leave misleading fibers stuck to the diamond which can deceive an examiner. In spite of all these precautions there still might exist fibers or dust particles on the diamond which have to be distinguished from an actual permanent flaw. In order to do this a special needle brush is required. If the needle is able to move a suspected flaw than it is not a flaw at all and can be considered a piece of debris. The needle brush is created by inserting the needle on the opposite end of a paint brush or a pencil.
