How should I go about negotiating the price of a diamond engagement ring with a jeweler?

Are the prices of diamond rings up for negotiation, or is what it says on the price tag the final price. What are the typical snares I can run into when negotiating at a jewelry store?

Good preparation means knowing about the prices of diamond engagement rings and knowing your budget. Remember that the money you can save on your engagement ring could go to other various wedding expenses, so keep that in mind if you feel yourself falling into one of the jeweler's/sales people's traps...


It is crucial that you stay alert throughout the negotiation – from beginning to end. The impulse buy is a common trap to watch out for. When the jewelry sales staff states that the diamond engagement ring you are interested in just so happens to be available for a limited time only, or that there is a special sale on it today, etc. be aware that this is most likely nothing more than a ploy to get you to rush and make the purchase on impulse and as soon as humanly possible.
