On the one hand more and more jewelry is being sold at department stores, which is appealing for the customers who look for a bargain and don't pay attention to every detail of a piece of diamond jewelry. On the other hand, internet diamond and jewelry stores offer profitable quality items, attracting even the biggest diamond experts. Does this mean that b&m diamond jewelry stores are passe?

Not at all. About 50% of the total jewelry sales in the US (I believe b&m sales, not including online jewelry stores) is obtained by specialty jewelers. Yes, online diamond shopping is getting popular and jewelry items are sold in many generalist stores, but the need for diamond jewelry b&m stores will never disappear.
Once the current economic recession is a thing of the past, diamond shoppers will spend money again and specialty jewelers will get back to making profits. Even if E-Commerce continues to invade our lives, many diamond customers will continue to trust only real jewelry stores, where they can observe a diamond and touch it or try a piece of jewelry on. Sometimes buying online jewelry requires much more patience than purchasing a diamond jewelry item in a trusted store.

Surely there are many advantages to purchasing diamond jewelry at specialty jewelers' stores rather than department stores, but are there benefits for specialty jewelers compared to online jewelry stores? I don't think so. Risks? There are enough well known and reliable online diamond stores which can be trusted wholeheartedly. Any scam and tons of online bad reviews would be posted, thus these jewelry stores work hard to maintain a good reputation. Prices? The most trivial comparison parameter - Buying online diamond jewelry could save you thousands of dollars. Quality / design? Online diamond jewelry stores can offer a wide variety of items, much more than any b&m shop. You could choose any design you want and maybe even order jewelry items that are not currently in stock. Customer service? Every reputable online jewelry store employs a staff who could assist you via phone or mail, usually in a much more attentive and continuous manner than the service b&m jewelry stores can offer.
I say yes, b&m specialty jewelers are approaching their final day, but no worries, specialty jewelers are also found online, in a much easier and direct manner than ever before, offering a beautiful variety of products.
