What makes a good jewelry vendor? How do I know I've found a jewelry store that's environmentally and socially responsible?

I want to buy a diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend, but before I shell out the cash, I want to know who I can trust. Any tips on questions to ask to help find out whether a jewelry provider is worthy of my business?

You're absolutely right to ask this question before making such an expensive and meaningful purchase as a diamond engagement ring. There are so many jewelry providers out there and it's not always clear how to differentiate the good from the bad (especially from the social and environmental standpoints) so I hope the following tips will help you out. First things first, reputation is key when looking for a diamond jewelry provider. Most reputable jewelry boutiques have store reviews or testimonials written about them either on the company website or on general store review websites. It's very important that the jewelry provider you decide on only sells conflict-free diamonds. Not only should the jeweler have a policy stating that all their diamonds are conflict free, it should also be clearly stated on the company website. In my opinion, observing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is not enough, but that depends on how socially and environmentally aware you are. Also, feel free to ask the jeweler about the origins of their gemstones. If they do not know the name of the diamond mine and how the diamonds were tracked from the mine to your engagement ring, I wouldn't buy from them. Search for a jewelry provider that utilizes recycled precious metals, as this has a huge impact on the environment. The jeweler you select should have a broad collection of styles and designs, especially in the diamond engagement ring department. Although you want to be optimistic when buying your girlfriend an engagement, there's always the chance that she might have had something a little bit different in mind so you want the selection for possible exchange to be wide enough to satisfy your girlfriend's needs. Find a jewelry provider that offers custom jewelry design so that your girlfriend will have the flexibility to create the ring of her dreams, just in case you didn't hit it right on the nose. Look for a jewelry provider that offers a wide array of gemstones and precious metals. Gemstones make lovely accents to diamond engagement rings, so it's great to leave that option open. Also, your girlfriend may be crazy about the engagement ring you got her, but want to change the precious metal from white gold to rose gold, for example. Of course, it's also crucial that the jewelry provider you select provides top quality jewelry. Customer service is also a very important point, especially when making a life altering purchase. This way, no matter which question you have about the diamond engagement ring, you'll know you can count on a loyal and helpful staff to assist you. Make sure that the jeweler you ultimately select has an excellent warranty policy. You never know what could go wrong with a piece of jewelry that your girlfriend plans on wearing daily for many years to come so it's best to get a lifetime warranty. If you really care about the environment, look for a jewelry provider that supports diamond and gold mining communities, offers training and medical aid, and helps to advance restoration in areas where gemstones are produced.
