The founders of the Diavik diamond mine have taken measures to keep the local wildlife and environment safe from the harms of diamond mining. In order to shield the caribou, which migrate to the Lac de Gras area in the spring and fall, signs have been placed on the roads in the area. Regarding the water in the region, the Diavik diamond mine has come up with a water collection method to assist in the protection of water quality. In addition, in order to make sure the toxins aren't discharged into the body of water, the Diavik diamond mine has implemented the Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program, which analyzes the water regularly to ensure minimal diamond mining damage. In spite of the fact that just a tiny part of the Lac de Gras has gone towards the Diavik Diamond Mine, it still has an effect on the fish and sea life in the lake. To assist in making up for this negative impact, they have taken care to build a rock-fill that supplies a new home for the fish. The Diavik diamond mine has also made it a point to clean up after itself, doing its utmost to make the most suitable arrangements for the inevitable closure of the diamond mine sometime down the road.

The Diavik diamond mine, located in Canada's Northwest Territory is the ultimate example of progressive diamond mining, as it adheres to the highest environmental standards and is careful to integrate into the local community. Way before the diamond mine was established, the founders of Diavik were sure to confer with local communities to discuss the effect that the diamond mining would have on them. Thankfully, the people standing behind the Diavik diamond mine have been true to their word. Currently, with the Diavik mine in full swing, they are still maintaining their obligation to offer proper diamond mining training and employment, as well as scholarships and business prospects to members of the communities in the area. Just last year, they went above and beyond what they had set out to do for the community by registering nineteen native apprentices into their diamond mining program. In fact, just under 70% of those included in the operation of the diamond mine are native employees. Furthermore, the same percentage of the Diavik mine's output went towards businesses in Canada's Northwest Territory, a large number of those businesses being native. From the environmental aspect, the Diavik diamond mine has quite a bit to be concerned with as the area where the mine is located is the habitat of wolverines, bears, and even caribou. In addition, the waters of the region are filled with fish and sea life. These issues are incredibly important to the time-honored ways of the local population. Caribou, for example, have both spiritual and nutritional significance for the natives in the region. The Diavik diamond mine has done an outstanding job of curtailing the environmental impact and showing great consideration for the requests of those residing in the communities. They have a strict environmental policy and they take great care to anticipate problematic issues. Therefore, they oftentimes succeed in steering clear of environmental problems that could arise as a result of diamond mining. Their concern with environmental issues and community involvement has definitely paid off, earning them great respect in the diamond mining industry.
