Are most diamonds mined in warzones?

I showed a friend of mine my beautiful new diamond engagement ring and she frowned at me and said it's probably a "blood diamond." Now I feel guilty for wearing it. Is this necessarily true?

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While the U.S. government may have enacted the Clean Diamond Trade Act, that doesn't mean that its origins are not from areas of conflict. If your diamond is old, then perhaps it predates much of the current "blood diamond" conflict, but today, no one can be sure. Now if your diamond has been certified a conflict-free diamond, than you can probably trust that certification.

No! Definitely not if your diamond was purchased in the USA. In 2003 the USA enacted the Clean Diamond Trade Act. Since the USA consumes more diamonds than any other country in the world, the US government saw itself responsible to insure that they do their part to prevent any relation between war and diamonds and to make sure that the miners' work conditions were legal. So don't worry. Relax and enjoy your beautiful new gem and hey, congratulations on your engagement!
