New diamond cuts - A reliable purchase or a gimmick?

Lately I have seen several diamond shapes which I have never came across before. It seems that some diamond production companies decide to be creative and design new brand cuts, invented and cut by their in-house experts. It seems very queer to me that while traditional diamond shapes have been studied thoroughly for many decades some companies have the courage to design their own shapes. Frankly, I don't know how to regard this matter. On the one hand creativity is a good thing, especially in such a conservative field such as diamonds, on the other hand I don't feel there is enough knowledge on these new shapes, therefore I will probably not be bold enough to purchase them. How do you regard this issue? Is it worthwhile for companies to invent new diamond shapes? How do diamond grading institutes treat this new queer diamonds?

No doubt that developing a new diamond shape is a risky move that requires a lot of courage. Sometimes this risk is worth taking, sometimes it isn't. It is true that in the last year many new diamond designs have been launched, which can be a quite surprising even, since this wasn't a good year for the diamond industry, to say the least. I think that for about 90% of diamond consumers, recession times induce conservatism, but for the other 10% maybe new, surprising cool looking designs can be attractive, as uniqueness becomes a more important principle.

Some diamond production companies have felt so frustrated of their financial downturns, so they felt that the only solution could be refreshing their supply, providing more eye catching and interesting designs. Many doubt how much success will these designs have in the long run, but at least now they are attracting the attention of the diamond market. It's a risk, but companies which are most secure with the creativity and style of their designers as well as the professionalism of their cutters believe that such strategy could improve sales.

Concerning diamond certificates, in order to make it possible for the new diamond designs to become popular it is absolutely necessary to have the diamonds graded by diamond institutes. Some companies even use the assistance of diamond institutes during the design development process, receiving tips about polishing, maximizing the diamond's light return, etc. Diamond production companies which develop their designs with the assistance of diamond grading labs are more likely to succeed in launching the new diamond shapes in the market and presenting them as quality diamonds with new advantages.
