Does anyone have an estimation of the size of the online jewelry market? I'm really curious about the growing popularity of buying jewelry online, and whether the online jewelry market is starting to take over real-world jewelry sales. It would be great to get references for the underlying data rather than just numbers. Thanks in advance!!

This data seems reliable but it is a bit old as I found it in BlueNile's prospectus (dated May 2004):
BlueNile quote the U.S. Census Bureau statistics (2002), saying that in 2002 the total U.S. retail jewelry sales (retail - not online!) were approximately $51 billion, out of which diamonds and diamond jewelry represented the largest portion (about 50% in 2003) of the U.S. retail jewelry market. They then quote Forrester Research that estimate that online jewelry sales will grow at a 25% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) from approximately $2 billion in 2003 to $6 billion in 2008. I hope that helps...

Do you mean the US Online Jewelry Market or the Global Online Jewelry Market? I think most answers here relate to the US Online Jewelry Market.
According to a publication by IDEX Online Research ("2008 U.S. Jewelry Sales Revised Sharply Downward"), the total jewelry sales in the U.S. market during 2008 were about $60 billion, while the total number for the global jewelry sales was estimated at the $125-140 billion range. Some estimations attempt to be a bit more accurate an state a range of $130-135 billion during 2008.
Note that these are total jewelry sales numbers (offline) and NOT online jewelry sales numbers.
