I'm curious. How much money was the most anyone ever paid for a diamond in an auction?

Some more historic facts: the Wittelsbach Diamond was lost after World War I. In the 30's Christie tried to sell it but actually found no buyers. Then in the 1960's A jeweler named Komkommer was asked to re-cut it but he refused. recognizing the historic value of the stone. He and a few other jewelers bought the diamond instead. Then in 2008 it was sold for 23.4 million dollars (or 16.4 million pounds Sterling) to Lawrence Graff, the famous London based jeweler. This was the highest price ever paid for a diamond at an auction to this day. Graff announced he was going to have it re-cut to remove some flaws and have its color enhanced.

That would be the Wittelsbach Diamond (or "Der Blaue Wittelsbacher" in German) It's a 17th century blue diamond. It originated in the Kollur mines in Southern India. It's named after the Noble German Wittelsbach family, the members of which were the dukes who ruled Bavaria up until the 20th century. Their name was taken from their official residence - the Castle of Wittelsbach. the fancy blue diamond was in the possession of the royal family until 1918.
The diamond weighs 35.56 metric carats, is 24.4 mm in diameter and roughly 8.3 mm deep. Other than a few scratches it is flawless. It has a unique cut with 82 facets. In 2008 Lawrence Graff bought the Wittelsbach Diamond for 16.4 Million POUNDS!
