My girlfriend is a crazy Elton John fan and I plan to make her a calendar with all sorts of funny Elton John pics that I photo-shopped her into. One of the pics I'm planning is Vanessa (my lady) bidding on a really expensive Elton John gem. Was there any famous auction recently she'd know about, or one coming up? Thanks folks!

LOL! That's such an awesome idea. I'm sure she's going to love it. The Elton John most recent auction I know about is the one held in September 2008 (you might want to make this the September pic in that case,) where a diamond and sapphire brooch of his was sold. I don't know how much it was eventually sold for to the winning bidder, but estimates were between 12,000 and 15,000 pounds Sterling. The Brooch was an Art Deco gem from the 1930's and Elton John had worn it in his "I Don't Wanna Go on With You Like That" music video in 1988. I'm sure your girlfriend will recognize it from the video if she's such a fan.I'm not such a crazy fan and I think even I know what scene that's from, just having seen the vid once or twice.
A photo of Elton John wearing the piece during filming for the video apparently came with the piece.

WAIT! that auction didn't happen. The diamond sapphire brooch was supposed to, but they ended up not auctioning it at the event. Don't know why. It's still a nice idea for the calendar though. If your girlfriend is such a fan she may even know about the whole auction story and why they decided not to auction it after all. But just so you know - it was planned just like described above but it didn't happen...
