How are specialty jewelers able to hold their own in today's economy? How can they compete with chain jewelry stores and large department stores selling jewelry? What makes specialty jewelry so special?

I know sometimes it seems as though diamond jewelry is offered in just about any place imaginable, from the mall to Cosco, sporting goods establishments, electronics stores, clothing shops, etc. The trend of every shopping establishment, from department stores to grocery stores selling diamond jewelry, is quite insulting to true professionals in the jewelry industry. The important thing to remember is that the jewelry sold at department stores and such is not exactly quality stuff – far from it. In the past couple of decades only about 50% of jewelry sales in America have been made by specialty jewelers and this figure isn't moving in either direction at the moment. Despite the rise in terms of places to buy diamond jewelry, specialty jewelers are still holding their own so I don't think they're going anywhere any time soon. Truly fine pieces of jewelry are not sold at convenience stores so people looking for quality jewelry will still turn to the true professionals. Diamonds have risen to their status due to their rareness so making them into a common commodity does run the risk of ultimately reducing their worth. A balance must be maintained between specialty jewelers and other vendors. While specialty jewelers continue to sell the more exquisite and exclusive jewelry, alternative vendors rely on the jewelry of lower quality and more affordable prices to do the trick. It all depends on what kind of diamond jewelry you're looking for. Some specialty jewelers aren't bothered by the wide variety of dealers that sell jewelry. Online jewelry sites also help to put off the spreading of department stores in the diamond market because they offer quality jewelry at much lower prices than regular jewelry providers. So for those looking to buy quality jewelry at a bargain price, it's a much better idea to go online jewelry shopping rather than turning to the nearest department store. Via the internet, specialty jewelers are able to provide potential consumers with more affordable prices, but still deliver quality jewelry in unique designs, and provide a wide selection.

I guess that the common misconception that diamonds sold online are rejects isn't so common anymore... Internet diamonds are by no means of lower standards than those in specialty jewelers' stores. The convenience of running an internet store, compared to a brick & mortar one actually allows online vendors to carry a wide variety of diamonds, including many stones which are very professionally cut. For consumers there's no question that an online search for diamonds can be both rewarding and informative.
