What is a Diamond Grading Report?

A diamond grading report is a document drafted by an accredited gemological laboratory that analyzes a loose diamond’s unique characteristics.  It is rare that a laboratory will offer grading services for a diamond already set in jewelry. Typically these reports assess, record, and grade the details of a diamond’s color, clarity, carat weight, and size measurements. Some grading reports also include evaluations of the stone’s symmetry, polish, light performance and fluorescence. Only Round Brilliant diamonds and sometimes Princess, Oval and Emerald cuts receive cut grades.

It is important to understand that a diamond grading report is not an appraisal. It is a professional documentation of a diamond’s distinctive characteristics.  There are a number of gemological laboratories that provide diamond certification services; the most famous and internationally recognized are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gemological Society Laboratories (AGSL), the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
