There are a number of reputable gemological laboratories founded abroad that provide consumer education, laboratory certification and engage in advanced gemological research. The European Gemological Laboratories USA (EGL USA), European Gemological Laboratories Worldwide (EGL Worldwide) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) are the most widely recognized in the international community. All three adhere to GIA grading standards for diamond cut, clarity and color grades.
European Gemological Laboratories (EGL)The European Gemological Laboratories USA (EGL USA) is a well established, reputable gemological laboratory. Dedicated to gemstone certification, education and research, the EGL was originally founded in Europe in 1973 as part of an international gemological research network. In 1977, EGL USA was established as a North American branch of EGL with the grand opening of a New York laboratory. By 1986, EGL USA changed ownership and became an independent institution. It is no longer affiliated with other EGL institutions. There are now EGL USA laboratories in New York City, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto.
EGL USA offers gemstone certification services for colorless diamonds, colored diamonds, colored gemstones and pearls. They also offer laser id inscription and appraisal services.
The European Gemological Laboratories Worldwide (EGL Worldwide) began with the opening of the first European Gemological Laboratory in Antwerp in 1973. It is globally recognized as institution promotion gemological studies, research, high industry standards and certification. Today EGL has laboratories in ten major international cities including Johannesburg, Paris, London, Tel Aviv, Seoul, Istanbul, Mumbai, Deli, and Cape Town.
EGL provides gemstone certification services for colorless diamonds, champagne diamonds; tanzanite grading; diamond consultation and diamond repolishing advice. Additionally, the EGL South African laboratories offer a number of college gemological degree programs.
International Gemological Institute (IGI)The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the largest independent gemstone certification and appraisal institute. It was established in 1975 in numerous cities around the world including Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Tokyo, Bangkok, Dubai, Toronto, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv and Cavalese.
The IGI offers gemstone colorless diamond reports and identification certificates, hearts and arrows reports, colored diamond reports, colored gemstone reports, jewelry reports, jewelry appraisals and more.
