A New Hampshire woman found a solitaire diamond ring white gold band valued at $5,500 in a scented candle which she got at the Merrimack Recycling Center. Police are now searching for its rightful owner.
The anonymous woman arrived at the local police station on Monday to turn the diamond ring over to the police. According to the police report, the woman picked up a fragrance candle from an exchange area at the recycling center where people leave assorted items that others might want.
When the woman picked up the candle from the recycling center on August 23, she was unaware that there was a valuable diamond ring inside. The candle was contained in a glass jar and nearly entirely sealed in plastic, save a small opening to allow the fragrance of the candle to be sampled. Only when she arrived home, opened the plastic and peered inside the glass container did she discover the diamond ring.
After she took the diamond ring to a local jeweler who confirmed the diamond was real, she took the ring to the police. Police say that they checked their database of lost and stolen property and found no records or reports of a solitaire diamond ring with a gold wedding band being lost or stolen. They say that ring is not new and is showing wear and tear from likely having been worn against a wedding band.
The Merrimack Police Criminal Investigation Bureau is asking anyone with a missing solitaire diamond ring with a gold band to contact them immediately. Further details of the ring, such as size, quality and diamond cut are being with held pending proof of ownership. Police will also ask claimers for a detailed description of the candle in which the ring was found.
