When do diamond fans and boxing fans come together? At the World Boxing Council (WBC) “Diamond Elite” fight this Saturday night, that’s when.

The championship fight, which will be fought between Sergio Gabriel Martinez and Sergei Dxinziruk at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, CT, may decide who will be new owner of a valuable and cherished WBC diamond belt.

The diamond-encrusted belt, which features an 18k yellow gold plate set with 598 diamonds, 196 emeralds and rubies and 156 Swarvoski crystals is valued at a whopping $50,000 and is regarded as a simple boxing bonus when there is not title at stake.

According to WBC officials, the diamond belt fight is completely unique and unlike any other championship fight in boxing:

“There are no rules. This is not a championship which has to be defended. It doesn’t have the same obligations as the world champion. It is a tribute to the fight, to both fighters and the winner takes it. It is simply a fitting recognition of a brilliant career.”

The WBC diamond belt is quite a new item in the world of boxing and a very special bonus indeed. In fact, the only one in the world who owns one to this day is Manny Pacquiao, from the Phillippines who earned his belt after defeating Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas in November 2009.

This Saturday night, the two figters who will be meeting in the ring are both considered to be outstanding contestants for the diamond belt. Thirty-four year-old Dzinziruk has an unbeaten streak of 37 fights and won the WBO junior middleweight championship in 2005. Thirty-five year-old Martinez, former WBC and WBO middleweight champion, also holds an impressive record of 46-2-2 and now holds the WBC emeritus championship title.

Diamond lovers and boxing fans alike are sure to be on the edge of their seat during this thrilling match.
